Understanding the Three Levels of CPD Activities: Which Are You Doing?

The HPCNA recognizes that professional development happens in different ways. Their CPD system organizes learning activities into three distinct levels, each with its own CEU values. Understanding this hierarchy will help you plan your professional development more effectively.

At Next.PSY, we understand the importance of strategic CPD planning. Our accredited courses are designed to maximize your CEU earnings across all three levels while genuinely enhancing your skills.

Level 1: Non-measurable Outcome Activities (1 CEU per hour, max 8 per day)

These are once-off activities without clearly measurable outcomes:

  • Breakfast meetings and presentations
  • Hospital or inter-departmental meetings and updates
  • Case study discussions
  • Teaching/learning ward rounds (not routine service rounds)
  • Special purpose lectures (not part of business meetings)
  • Mentoring and supervision activities
  • Conferences, symposia, and refresher courses without measurable outcomes
  • Interest groups meeting less than six times per year
  • Pro bono services (maximum 5 CEUs over two years)

Presenter bonus: Presenters of Level 1 activities receive double CEUs (except for large group activities).

Level 2: Measurable Outcome Activities

These activities have defined outcomes but don’t constitute a full year of CEUs:

Co-author/editor of publication/book chapter 5
Reviewing an article/book chapter 3
Principal presenter/author of paper/poster at congress 10

Co-presenter of accredited short course 5

External examiner of Master’s/Doctoral thesis 5 per thesis
Ethics workshops/lectures 2 per hour
Single modules of Masters degrees (non-degree purposes) 5 on completion
Professional Interest Groups (min. 6 meetings/year) 3 per meeting

Level 3: Structured Learning (30 CEUs per activity)

These are formal programs with measurable outcomes:

    • Postgraduate degrees/diplomas recognized as additional qualifications (30 CEUs per year of study, plus 30 CEUs on completion)
    • Short courses (min. 25 hours) with clinical hands-on training and formal assessment
    • Learning portfolios
    • Practice audits

Maximize your Level 3 CEUs: Our comprehensive certification programs qualify as structured learning with formal assessments. These intensive courses not only provide the maximum 30 CEUs but also deliver practical skills you can immediately apply in your practice.

Remember, you can obtain CEUs from any level that suits your needs and practice environment. The key is to maintain diversity in your learning and focus on activities that genuinely enhance your professional practice.
